Indonesia: Indonesia's 17,508 islands, about 6,000
of which are inhabited, are scattered over both sides of the equator.
By land area, the five largest islands are Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan,
New Guinea (shared with Papua New Guinea) and Sulawesi.
With at least 150 active volcanos, the ash is a major contributor to the
high agricultural fertility. Indonesian coffee is widely considered to be
the most organic coffee on earth. Sumatra grows some of the world's
richest Arabica coffee.
- Sumatra, "Gayo People" Aceh; Organic, shade grown Fair Trade.
Sumatran coffee is known for its full body and richness. Aceh is the area in Sumatra where this coffee comes from and Takengon is the village wehre the coffee is milled. This coffee is specially milled for Vermont Artisan following a different process than the one used for Mandehling coffees.in general. Our process highlights the syrupy heavy body and earthy tones of this coffee.
- Sumatra, Dark Roast; Organic shade grown Fair Trade.
For those who crave an organic dark roast...we've taken our ever so popular "Gayo" and roasted it to a darker level. Rich, full bodied, earthy and syrupy.
- Sumatra, Decaffeinated, We love Sumatra for it's full body so naturally we choose it for our signature decaf. All the full flavor that Sumatra coffees offer and naturally decafeinated.
- Moka Java, Organic Fair Trade.
Born out of a 17th century blunder,a clipper ship transporting coffees from the Yemen port of Mocha and the Indonesian island of Java, inadvertently mixed them. Thus, the first ever reported blend, Moka Java was born! Not a chocolate flavored coffee...Earthy, sweet and wild.

"For four consecutive years, I visited Sumatra where I worked with a small village and asked them to produce a coffee just for me. What distinguishes this "Gayo Aceh" coffee is still an earthy, syrupy taste but much cleaner than usual. We offer them a prize for reaching quality goals as well ~We're proud to say, this year the village earned an extra $500."
